As the breezes of November bring a quiet chill to the air, each of us inwardly longs for a warm refuge found in meaningful connections. In this life, we need not only to be loved and comforted, but God has also called us to a beautiful purpose—to learn how to comfort and care for others.
Yet, learning to care well is not always easy. Often, despite our good intentions, we may hesitate to express ourselves, or feel uncertain about how to walk alongside a friend going through difficult times.
Today, we turn to Proverbs 27, a chapter that reads like a wise mentor gently sharing the art of true friendship and godly care.
King Solomon reveals the preciousness of authentic friendship: true love goes beyond superficial compliments; it encompasses faithful counsel, loving honesty, and a steady presence that refreshes the soul like ointment and perfume.

Proverbs 27 contains a rich collection of concise sayings on human relationships, true friendship, and self-examination.
In ancient Near Eastern culture, ointments and perfumes were highly prized luxuries that brought physical comfort, delight, and honor to guests. Meanwhile, the shaping of iron tools required two pieces of iron striking and rubbing against each other to produce a sharp, effective edge.
The Sweetness of Counsel (v. 9): A friend’s earnest and honest advice refreshes the soul just as fragrant oil and perfume gladden the heart, bringing deep comfort and clarity in times of confusion.
Iron Sharpening Iron (v. 17): True friendship does not consist of blind flattery, but of mutual encouragement, constructive challenge, and sharpening in truth and love. Though such interactions may occasionally involve tension, they refine us into mature and discerning individuals.

2 Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.
3 A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool's wrath is heavier than them both.
4 Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?
5 Open rebuke is better than secret love.
6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
7 The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.
8 As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place.
9 Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.
10 Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.

1. Light 💡
What comforts and instructs our hearts most in Proverbs 27 is God's gentle guidance on how to care for those around us.
Sincere Counsel Possesses Nourishing Power: Genuine care does not mean telling others only what they want to hear; it means speaking the truth in love when needed (v. 6). Thoughtful concern and honest wisdom bring clarity and comfort like soothing balm.
Mutual Building Through Fellowship: "Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend." (v. 17) God places us in families, churches, and friendships so that through honest interaction and mutual grace, our lives may be shaped more into the likeness of Christ.

Is there a friend or family member going through a confusing time who might need an honest, loving word of encouragement or a warm gesture from me today?

Dear Heavenly Father and Lord Jesus,
Thank You for bringing wisdom into my heart today through Proverbs 27 on how to love, comfort, and walk alongside others.
Lord, thank You for the family, friends, and co-laborers You have placed around me. Remove all insincerity and indifference from my heart, and teach me how to care for others with a genuine heart. Grant me compassion to feel their pain, and wisdom to speak uplifting words, so that my presence may bring comfort and joy like sweet incense.
May Your love flow through us, so that as we walk together and sharpen one another, we may grow into Your glorious image.
