I am Dandelion, your Bible-reading companion. Today is January 2, the second day of our year-long journey through God’s comfort, compassion, and care.

Yesterday, Psalm 6 reminded us that the Lord hears our supplication and receives our prayer. Today, Psalm 13 takes us into another deeply human experience: waiting so long that we begin to wonder whether God has forgotten us.

Perhaps you have prayed about the same situation many times, yet nothing seems to change.

Perhaps you are waiting for healing, direction, reconciliation, provision, or an answer that still has not come. You may know that God is faithful, yet your heart still asks:

“How long?”

Psalm 13 shows us that this question is not evidence of a faithless heart. It can become the beginning of an honest conversation with God.

David does not hide his confusion or force himself to sound hopeful. He brings his full emotional struggle before the Lord. Yet he does not remain trapped in despair. As he prays, his attention gradually turns from the length of his suffering to the steadfastness of God’s mercy.

As you read Psalm 13 today, consider the passage from these two perspectives:

• The honesty of “How long?” Notice that David asks this question four times. What does this teach us about bringing repeated pain and unanswered questions before God?

• The movement from sorrow to trust: Observe how David moves from feeling forgotten to declaring, “But I have trusted in thy mercy.” His circumstances may not yet have changed, but prayer begins to change the direction of his heart.

Whatever you have been carrying for a long time, may today’s reading assure you that God is not offended by your honest questions. He invites you to speak, to wait, and to trust His mercy again.

📖 A Brief Background to Today’s Passage: A Prayer from a Season of Prolonged Waiting 

Psalm 13 is a brief lament written by David during a season of ongoing distress.

The Psalm does not tell us exactly what had happened. David may have been facing persecution, danger, illness, betrayal, or another prolonged crisis. What is clear is that the suffering had continued long enough for him to feel forgotten by God.

The words “How long?” appear four times in the opening two verses. They reveal several layers of pain:

• David feels forgotten by God.

• He feels that God’s face is hidden from him.

• He struggles daily with sorrowful thoughts.

• He sees his enemy continuing to prevail.

David’s anguish is not merely about difficult circumstances. The deepest pain is the feeling that God is absent while the suffering continues.

Yet the Psalm does not end where it begins.

Its six verses move through three clear stages:

• Lament: “How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD?”

• Prayer: “Consider and hear me, O LORD my God.”

• Trust and praise: “But I have trusted in thy mercy.”

David does not wait until every problem is resolved before expressing trust. In the middle of uncertainty, he remembers God’s mercy and chooses to rest his heart there.

Psalm 13 therefore gives us a biblical pattern for difficult seasons: we may question honestly, pray specifically, and trust God even before we see the answer.

Today’s Reflection: Light & Response  

1. Light 💡 : Faith Can Still Say “But” in the Middle of Pain

The turning point of Psalm 13 begins with one small but powerful word:

“But.”

David has not received a visible answer. His enemy has not necessarily disappeared, and the long season of waiting may not yet be over. Nevertheless, he declares:

“But I have trusted in thy mercy.”

This is not denial. David is not pretending that the sorrow does not hurt. He is choosing to place a greater truth beside his pain: God’s mercy remains trustworthy.

• God allows us to ask difficult questions: David asks “How long?” repeatedly, and Scripture preserves his words for us. God does not shame him for expressing confusion. Honest lament can be an act of faith because David directs his questions toward God rather than turning completely away from Him.

• Feeling forgotten does not mean we have been forgotten: Our emotions are real, but they do not always reveal the whole truth. David feels forgotten, yet he continues to address the Lord as “my God.” Even when God seems silent, the covenant relationship remains.

• Trust often begins before circumstances change: David’s movement toward praise begins when he remembers God’s mercy and past goodness. Faith does not always mean that the problem has ended. Sometimes faith means choosing to lean on God while we are still waiting.

God’s mercy is not temporary or dependent upon our ability to feel hopeful. Even on days when our hearts are heavy, His lovingkindness remains firm beneath us.

2. Stillness & Reflection 💭 

As you sit with God’s Word today, gently ask yourself:

• Is there an area of my life in which I have been asking, “How long, Lord?”

• Have I mistaken God’s silence for His absence or His delay for forgetfulness?

• What past experience of God’s faithfulness can help me trust His mercy today?

• What would it look like for me to say, “But I have trusted in thy mercy,” even before my circumstances change?

3. Gentle Practice 🍃 

• Write your own “How long?” prayer: Complete this sentence honestly:
  “How long, O Lord, must I continue to carry…”
  Tell God what has made you weary, confused, afraid, or discouraged. Do not correct your emotions or rush toward a positive conclusion. Allow yourself to speak truthfully in His presence.

• Add a sentence of trust: Beneath your honest prayer, write:
  “But I have trusted in thy mercy.”
  This does not erase your pain. It places your pain within the greater reality of God’s steadfast love.

• Remember one past kindness: Write down one specific way the Lord has cared for you in the past. Let that memory remind you that the God who has dealt bountifully with you before has not stopped caring for you now.
