Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, peace be with you in the Lord!
I am Dandelion, your Bible reading companion. I am so glad to gather with you in the quiet stillness of God’s Word as we begin this day filled with love and care.
The early morning hours often set the tone for the rest of our day. As we wake up to the morning light, our minds can quickly become crowded with the tasks ahead, complex relationships, or unresolved worries. Entering the daily routine with a tense heart can leave us feeling weary before the day even begins.
Today, we will read Psalm 5, a beautiful morning prayer written by King David.
David did not give the first moments of his day over to anxiety or self-reliant planning. Instead, as dawn broke, he gathered his innermost thoughts and worries, laying them out reverently before God. This psalm reminds us that morning is not just the start of another busy day, but a precious opportunity to open our hearts to God and draw genuine peace from Him.
As you read Psalm 5 today, I invite you to keep these two perspectives in mind:
Heartfelt Morning Words: Notice in verses 1–3 how David uses tender expressions like "give ear" and "direct my prayer," bringing his quiet groaning and prayers directly before God.
Resting in God’s Steadfast Love: Observe verses 7 and 11–12, seeing how David relies on God's abundant mercy to find renewed joy and security under His protective favor.
Let us quiet our hearts together and offer our first thoughts of the day to God, finding steadfast assurance in His enduring love.
Psalm 5 was written by David during a season when he faced distressing circumstances and deceptive words from those around him.
In the Ancient Near East, morning was the time when kings held court, judgments were rendered, and people set out for their daily work. Yet for David, the most important priority each morning was not rushing out to fix troublesome problems, but coming first into the presence of the King of kings.
In verse 3, David prays: "My voice shalt thou hear in the morning... in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up." The word "direct" (or order) in the original language carries the imagery of carefully arranging an offering upon an altar.
Sorting Through the Noise: David did not merely hurry into God's presence with haphazard complaints; he thoughtfully arranged all his worries, emotions, and needs before God, and then looked up in hopeful expectation for God's response.
Favor as a Shield: At the end of the psalm (v. 12), David speaks of God's favor as a shield. God’s grace compasses us like a large, protective shield, guarding our hearts against the anxieties of the day.
This background reassures us: every morning, we can bring our tangled thoughts and lay them neatly before God, knowing He surrounds us with His unfailing care.
5 Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my meditation.
2 Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray.
3 My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.
4 For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee.
5 The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.
6 Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing: the Lord will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.
7 But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.
8 Lead me, O Lord, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face.
9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue.
10 Destroy thou them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against thee.
11 But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.
12 For thou, Lord, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.
“My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.”
—— Psalm 5:3 (KJV)
1. Light 💡
What touches our hearts most in Psalm 5 is God’s attentive listening to our morning prayers.
God Treasures Your Morning Voice: David’s words, "My voice shalt thou hear in the morning," bring immense comfort. God is never too busy or distant for you. In the very first moment you wake, your quietest cry and deepest sigh are fully heard by Him.
Surrounded by Favor as a Shield: Verse 12 reminds us that God's favor is not intermittent; it compasses us like a shield on every side. Wherever you go today, this gentle, unseen shield is quietly guarding your heart.
2. Stillness & Reflection 💭
Today, let God's Word gently prompt your heart:
When I opened my eyes this morning, what was the first thought that entered my mind? Was it a worry about the unknown, or a promise of God’s love?
Am I willing to set aside a few quiet moments each morning to lay my deepest concerns honestly before God, arranging them gently in prayer?
3. Gentle Practice 🍃
A Morning Offering: Tomorrow morning when you wake up, before reaching for your phone, take a slow deep breath. Quietly pray: "Lord, as a new day begins, I lay my worries before You. Guide my steps and keep my heart in Your peace."
Carrying a Promise: Keep verse 3 in mind (“My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee...”). Whenever you feel overwhelmed today, remind yourself: God has already heard your prayer and is shielding you with His favor.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for gently awakening my heart this morning with Your Word of grace and truth. Thank You for listening attentively to my voice and welcoming the honest feelings and quiet groans of my heart.
Lord, as a new day unfolds with its daily tasks and unknown challenges, I choose not to carry them alone. I lay all my thoughts and worries before You, asking that Your peace fill my heart. May Your favor surround me like a shield today, granting me confidence, strength, and quiet rest.
In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
