Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, peace be with you in the Lord!
I am Dandelion, your Bible reading companion. I am so glad to gather with you once again in the tranquil stillness of God’s Word to find nourishment and calm.
In our daily journeys, we all inevitably encounter moments where we feel overwhelmed or unsettled by a quiet sense of anxiety—perhaps a heavy responsibility, a challenging conversation, or subtle worries about an uncertain future. As these pressures pile up, fear can easily creep in, making us doubt our ability or feel like stepping back.
Today, we will read 2 Timothy 1, a letter filled with deep affection, tenderness, and divine strength.
The young minister Timothy was facing immensely difficult responsibilities and a challenging environment alone, leaving his heart prone to isolation and hesitation. Yet Paul, writing from a prison cell like a loving father, gently reminded him: God has not given us a spirit of fear. Rather than scolding Timothy for his weakness, Paul guided him to refocus on God’s grace, love, and promises.
As you read 2 Timothy 1 today, I invite you to keep these two perspectives in mind:
The True Mark Given by God: Notice verse 7—how does Paul define the spiritual mindset given to us by God? Where does this strength of "power, love, and a sound mind" originate?
Unshakable Assurance in Trials: In verse 12, Paul declares, "I know whom I have believed." Facing external uncertainties, how is this steadfast confidence built without shame?
Let us quiet our hearts together and step into these comforting words, releasing our fears into His care.
Second Timothy is the final epistle written by the Apostle Paul before his martyrdom.
Paul was incarcerated in a dark Roman prison, while his beloved younger co-worker, Timothy, was left to serve alone in Ephesus amidst complex environments, external pressures, and internal trials. Timothy was naturally gentle and sensitive, and facing such immense weight filled his heart with tears and anxiety (v. 4).
Understanding Timothy’s deep loneliness and apprehension, Paul offered the most thoughtful comfort in Chapter 1:
Acknowledging Tears, Strengthening Faith: Paul not only remembered Timothy’s tears, but also reminded him of the sincere faith passed down from his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice. True faith does not appear out of thin air; it is a trace of ongoing grace.
Remembering the Spirit Given by God: Fear often comes when we stare too closely at our own limitations. Paul gently reminded Timothy that God has already equipped us with power, love, and a sound mind.
Unwavering Trust in God’s Preservation: Even in prison, Paul remained at peace because he knew beyond doubt that God was fully able to keep what had been committed unto Him (v. 12).
This context reminds us: even in challenging circumstances, God has already prepared strength that far surpasses our fear.
1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,
2 To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;
4 Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;
5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.
6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;
9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:
11 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.
12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
14 That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.
15 This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.
16 The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain:
17 But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.
18 The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
—— 2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV)
1. Light 💡
What comforts our hearts most in 2 Timothy 1 is the steady, grounded support God offers whenever we feel fearful.
Fear Is Not Your True Nature: When anxiety or hesitation arises, verse 7 offers an unmistakable promise—fear is not a gift from God. What God has placed inside you is courage to face challenges (power), warmth toward others (love), and a calm, clear mindset (a sound mind).
Knowing Whom You Have Believed: Paul maintained peace in hardship not because he had self-confidence, but because he "knew whom he believed." When we shift our focus from "Can I do this?" to "God will faithfully preserve me," anxiety yields to true peace.
2. Stillness & Reflection 💭
Today, let God's Word gently prompt your heart:
Is there an area in my life or work right now that makes me feel fearful or hesitant to move forward?
When anxiety rises, am I willing to gently redirect my mind back to the spirit of "power, love, and a sound mind" given by God?
3. Gentle Practice 🍃
An Inner Reset: Whenever you feel a wave of anxiety or fear today, take a deep breath and quietly say to yourself: "God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of peace and strength."
Carrying a Promise: Keep verse 7 in mind (“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind”). Let God's Word serve as your steady shield throughout the day.
