Jan 15 | Remembering God’s Ancient Deeds in Heavy Nights - Psalm 77 | Comfort & Care One-Year Bible Reading Plan
When you toss and turn at night with a heavy heart, read Psalm 77. Join your reading companion Dandelion to shift your gaze toward God's faithful deeds in history and your life, finding deep rest and anchor in His silent care.
Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, peace be with you in the Lord!
I am Dandelion, your Bible reading companion. I am so glad to gather with you once again in this quiet moment to share the rest found in God’s Word.
I wonder if you have ever had an experience like this: during the day, busy schedules keep your mind occupied; but when night falls and everything grows quiet, unspoken worries, unmet expectations, or a vague sense of fatigue suddenly wash over you like a tide. As you toss and turn, even offering a simple prayer feels heavy.
Today, we will read Psalm 77, an honest confession written by the Psalmist during just such a restless, sleepless night.
This Psalm speaks so gently to our common human experience. In the first half, the Psalmist lays out his struggles and questions without hesitation. Yet in the second half, a wondrous shift occurs in his perspective. Rather than forcing himself to push his feelings away, he chooses to turn his mind toward unshakeable realities—God’s faithful deeds and mighty acts displayed throughout history and life.
As you read Psalm 77 today, I invite you to keep these two perspectives in mind:
Shifting the Focus Outward: Observe the contrast between verses 1–9 (asking about "myself" and "has God forgotten?") and the turning point after verse 11 ("I will remember," "I will meditate"). How does the Psalmist's spirit find peace?
Footprints Hidden in the Waters: Pay special attention to verse 19—when God led His people through the Red Sea, His footprints were unseen in the deep waters, yet He was truly guiding His flock every step of the way.
Let us quiet our hearts together and follow the Psalmist's steps to find rest in God's mighty and faithful Word.
Psalm 77 is a wisdom lament composed by Asaph.
In verses 1–9, Asaph paints a vivid picture of a restless night: "In the night I stretched out my untiring hands," "my soul refused to be comforted," "my eyes were kept from sleep." He even poses six heavy questions, wondering if God's favor has ceased or if His loving devotion has ended forever.
However, verse 10 serves as the beautiful turning point of the entire Psalm:
Remembering Ancient Wonders: Asaph realized that if he remained fixated on his immediate feelings and distress, his heart would only grow heavier. So, he intentionally redirected his thoughts to recall God’s mighty power and grace demonstrated in ancient days (such as leading Israel out of Egypt and through the sea).
Silent Yet Firm Guidance: Verses 19–20 use poetic imagery to declare: God's way was through the sea, His paths through the mighty waters, though His footprints were unseen, yet He led His people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron. This reassures us: even when God seems silent, His deep love and guidance have never left us.
This context reminds us: when our hearts feel heavy, our best anchor is not forced cheerfulness, but recalling God's unchanging faithfulness and mercy in the past.
77 I cried unto God with my voice, even unto God with my voice; and he gave ear unto me.
2 In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted.
3 I remembered God, and was troubled: I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah.
4 Thou holdest mine eyes waking: I am so troubled that I cannot speak.
5 I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.
6 I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search.
7 Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more?
8 Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore?
9 Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah.
10 And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High.
11 I will remember the works of the Lord: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.
12 I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.
13 Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God?
14 Thou art the God that doest wonders: thou hast declared thy strength among the people.
15 Thou hast with thine arm redeemed thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.
16 The waters saw thee, O God, the waters saw thee; they were afraid: the depths also were troubled.
17 The clouds poured out water: the skies sent out a sound: thine arrows also went abroad.
18 The voice of thy thunder was in the heaven: the lightnings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook.
19 Thy way is in the sea, and thy path in the great waters, and thy footsteps are not known.
20 Thou leddest thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”
—— Psalm 77:11-12
1. Light 💡
What comforts our hearts most in Psalm 77 is the solid assurance found amidst uncertainty.
God Allows Us Our Heavy Nights: Scripture faithfully records Asaph’s sleeplessness and questions. God does not fault us for sighing in times of distress, for He remembers our human frailties.
Memory As Wings for Faith: When our immediate surroundings feel hazy and uncertain, recalling God’s past care (or the promises written in Scripture) becomes the key to renewing our strength. As verse 19 reveals, even when "God's footprints are unseen," He remains as our Shepherd, quietly guiding our every step.
2. Stillness & Reflection 💭
Today, let God's Word gently prompt your heart:
When I feel restless or anxious in the quiet hours of the night, do I tend to dwell on the difficulties, or am I willing to remember God's past grace?
Looking back at my life, were there times when God’s "footprints seemed unseen," yet looking back now, I can see how He safely guided me all along like a shepherd?
3. Gentle Practice 🍃
Recalling a Grace: Before going to sleep tonight, take a moment to count one or two blessings or instances of God's protection in your life, ending the day with a simple prayer: "Thank You, Lord."
Carrying a Promise: Keep verses 11–12 in mind (“I will remember the deeds of the Lord... and meditate on all your mighty deeds”). Whenever thoughts feel heavy today, quietly repeat these words, anchoring your mind on His faithfulness.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for showing me in Psalm 77 that whenever my heart feels heavy or confused in the night, I can come freely before You.
Lord, open my mind so that I do not fixate on present worries, but instead recall Your ancient wonders and Your unchanging power. Thank You that even when Your footprints in the waters are unseen, I can trust that You are gently leading my steps like a shepherd.
May Your peace rest upon my heart tonight, granting me deep stillness and unshakeable hope.
In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
