Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, peace be with you in the Lord!
I am Dandelion, your Bible reading companion. I am so glad to gather with you once again at this special moment in the warmth of God’s Word, seeking refreshment and rest for our souls together.
Amidst the constant busyness of life, we inevitably encounter times of physical discomfort, emotional depletion, or feeling simply overwhelmed. When our health fluctuates or our inner spirit drops into a valley, the world around us seems to slow down, and a sense of helplessness can quietly creep in. In those moments of vulnerability, we long for a steady power that can hold our uneasy hearts.
Today, we will read Psalm 107, a hymn brimming with thanksgiving and hope.
This psalm paints vivid pictures of people in various trials—wandering in deserts, sitting in darkness, suffering through sickness, or tossing in stormy seas. Yet, a profoundly comforting rhythm echoes throughout the entire passage: whenever people cry out to God in their distress, He breaks their chains, calms their storms, and sends forth His Word to heal them.
As you read Psalm 107 today, I invite you to keep these two perspectives in mind:
The Repeated Fourfold Cry: Notice how the phrase "Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble" echoes throughout the psalm. How does God instantly become a refuge the moment people realize they have reached the end of their own strength?
The Healing Power of God’s Word: Verse 20 mentions that God "sent his word, and healed them." How does God's Word transcend physical and environmental limitations to bring true peace to our mind and body?
Let us quiet our minds together and step into His Word, finding firm anchor in His unfailing love.
Psalm 107 marks the opening of the fifth book of Psalms. It is widely recognized as a song of thanksgiving, recording how God faithfully delivers His people from diverse hardship.
In verses 17–22, the Psalmist offers a deeply empathetic portrayal of human sickness and extreme frailty. People in such affliction "abhorred all manner of meat" due to pain or despair, feeling as though they were drawing near to the gates of death.
Yet at that very end of human resources, a moving transformation takes place:
An Honest, Raw Cry: They did not wait to compose their thoughts or craft sophisticated prayers; they simply cried out to God directly in their distress. God never despises our awkwardness or frailty when we reach out to Him.
The Promise of Sending His Word: Verse 20 uniquely notes that God "sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions." God's Word is not merely comforting language; it carries creative and restorative power that reaches into the deepest places of our pain.
This context reassures us: whether we face physical weariness or spiritual fatigue today, God remains the One who is always ready to listen and heal us with His power.
107 O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;
3 And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south.
4 They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in.
5 Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.
6 Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.
7 And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.
8 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
9 For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.
10 Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron;
11 Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High:
12 Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help.
13 Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.
14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.
15 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
16 For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.
17 Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.
18 Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death.
19 Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.
20 He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.
21 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
22 And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.
23 They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;
24 These see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.
25 For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.
26 They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.
27 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit's end.
28 Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.
29 He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.
30 Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.
31 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
32 Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.
33 He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground;
34 A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.
35 He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings.
36 And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation;
37 And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase.
38 He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.
39 Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow.
40 He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way.
41 Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock.
42 The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.
43 Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the Lord.
“He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.”
—— Psalm 107:20 (KJV)
1. Light 💡
What touches our hearts most in Psalm 107 is God’s swift response and tender healing when we are at our weakest.
God Is Never Indifferent to Your Cry: Four times the psalm repeats, "Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses." This tells us that God does not only love us when we are healthy and strong. Even in our sickest and most frail moments, our quietest cry reaches the very depth of His heart.
His Word Brings Restoration: God often heals by imparting His Word into our lives. When His promises settle into our hearts, anxiety and fear are dispelled, replaced by a deep peace and rest that comes from above.
2. Stillness & Reflection 💭
Today, let God's Word gently prompt your heart:
In my recent life, is there an area of physical fatigue or inner weakness that I have been trying to push through on my own strength?
Am I willing, like the people in the psalm, to stop carrying the burden alone and honestly cry out my pain and frailty to God?
3. Gentle Practice 🍃
An Act of True Surrender: Sometime today, find a quiet moment to gently place your hand over where you feel tired or uncomfortable (or over your heart). Offer a simple prayer: "Lord, in my place of weakness, send Your word to heal me and grant me Your peace."
Carrying a Promise: Keep verse 20 in mind (“He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions”). Whenever you feel physically drained or emotionally low today, repeat it quietly in your heart, feeling the sustaining care of His Word.

In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
