I am Dandelion, your Bible reading companion. I am so glad to gather with you once again in the gentle stillness of God’s Word as we approach the very end of the year.
In these final days of December, looking back over the journey of this year, many of us may have walked through high mountains as well as deep valleys. At times, uncertain circumstances, setbacks in service or work, or an inner exhaustion can leave us feeling painfully small and weak. Looking at the road ahead, we might find ourselves asking, like young Jeremiah, "I am so weak and inexperienced—can I truly keep going and serving?"
Today, as we read Jeremiah 1, we step into a story of God’s tender calling to a young man filled with self-doubt and fear during a tumultuous and broken era.
God did not ask Jeremiah to be an instant hero, nor did He hide the coming challenges. Instead, He gave him the most unshakeable promise: "Be not afraid... for I am with thee."
As you read Jeremiah 1 today, I invite you to keep these two perspectives in mind:
God’s Sovereign Preparation & Call: Observe God’s words to Jeremiah in verses 4–10. How does God establish His purpose over our lives long before we even realize our weaknesses?
Presence & Protection in Low Seasons: In verses 17–19, amid a harsh generation, how does God promise to make Jeremiah a "defenced city, an iron pillar, and brasen walls"? What security does this bring to your low seasons?

Jeremiah 1 records the call of the prophet Jeremiah. During the late reign of King Josiah, the southern kingdom of Judah was sinking into a low season marked by political instability, spiritual decline, and moral decay.
It was into this atmosphere that God’s call came to young Jeremiah:
God’s Sovereignty and Gentle Encouragement: Facing a daunting mission, Jeremiah’s first reaction was, "Ah, Lord God! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child" (v. 6). But God immediately quieted his fears with firm, compassionate words, revealing that before he was formed in the womb, God knew him and appointed him.
Shifting Focus from Self to God’s Presence: The Lord put forth His hand and touched Jeremiah’s mouth, giving him His words, and showed him visions of an "almond rod" and a "seething pot," reassuring him that God Himself watches over His word to perform it. God does not seek our innate greatness; He seeks our willingness to rely honestly on His presence.
This background reminds us: even in our lowest valleys or the most difficult eras, God’s calling and presence remain constant.

1 The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin:
2 To whom the word of the Lord came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.
3 It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, unto the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah king of Judah, unto the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month.
4 Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.
6 Then said I, Ah, Lord God! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child.
7 But the Lord said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.
8 Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord.
9 Then the Lord put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth.
10 See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.
11 Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree.
12 Then said the Lord unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it.
13 And the word of the Lord came unto me the second time, saying, What seest thou? And I said, I see a seething pot; and the face thereof is toward the north.
14 Then the Lord said unto me, Out of the north an evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land.
15 For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith the Lord; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah.
16 And I will utter my judgments against them touching all their wickedness, who have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands.
17 Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all that I command thee: be not dismayed at their faces, lest I confound thee before them.
18 For, behold, I have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron pillar, and brasen walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land.
19 And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee, saith the Lord, to deliver thee.

1. Light 💡
What touches our hearts deeply in Jeremiah 1 is how tenderly God cradles and upholds those who feel weak.
He Accepts Your Honest Inexperience: When you feel inadequate, unable to articulate your heart, or hesitant in a low season, God never rejects you. He completely understands your reservations and welcomes your most raw and honest prayers.
His Presence is the Ultimate Victory Over Fear: God did not promise that the environment would suddenly become effortless, but He promised, "I am with thee." This presence is not an empty phrase; it acts as a fortified wall that enables us to stand firm and continue shining even in deep valleys.
2. Stillness & Reflection 💭
Today, let God's Word gently search your heart:
Is there a feeling of "I am too young/I am too weak" in my current life or service that is holding me back from moving forward?
As I hear God saying, "Be not afraid... for I am with thee," am I willing to hand over my inner anxieties and receive the courage He freely offers?
3. Gentle Practice 🍃
An Honest Prayer of Unloading: Find a quiet moment to pray to God without pretense. Tell Him about the tiredness, fear, or inadequacy you feel in your low season, and then speak aloud: "Lord, I choose to believe that You are with me."
Holding Fast to a Promise: Write down today's key verse ("Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord") on a card or your phone screen. Whenever you feel overwhelmed today, read it softly to remind yourself that you are never alone.

Dear Heavenly Father and Lord Jesus,
Thank You for speaking deep comfort to my heart through Jeremiah 1 on this December day. Lord, You know the low seasons of my life, and You know the fears and limitations I carry inside. So often, like Jeremiah, I look at my own inadequacy and shrink back.
Thank You for reminding me that long before my life was formed, You already knew me and loved me. Take away the fear from my heart, touch my life anew, and grant me honest prayer and steadfast hope.
May Your abiding presence be my fortified wall, enabling me to follow You faithfully and serve You with love even in the low seasons.
In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
