Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, peace be with you in the Lord!
I am Dandelion, your Bible reading companion. I am so happy to gather with you again in this tranquil moment as we rest together in God’s Word.
By mid-January, life often carries a mix of daily responsibilities and subtle, invisible pressures. Sometimes, despite our best efforts to hold everything together, a sudden sense of weakness washes over us—as if our footing has slipped, leaving us tired and worried that we might not be able to keep going.
Today, we will read Psalm 94, a passage written specifically for hearts that feel shaky and long to be held securely.
While this psalm speaks of longing for righteousness, deep at its core lies a profoundly gentle and reassuring spiritual experience. The psalmist honestly admits in his rawest vulnerability: "When I said, 'My foot is slipping...'" Yet, right at that precarious edge, he did not fall—because a loving hand was already there to hold him up.
As you read Psalm 94 today, I invite you to keep these two perspectives in mind:
Timely Support: Notice in verse 18 when the psalmist experiences God’s steadfast love. God does not wait until we have completely fallen to pick up the pieces; He reaches out the very moment we feel ourselves slipping.
Inner Transformation and Comfort: Verse 19 mentions a heart "filled with anxiety." Observe how God’s consolation penetrates that heavy turmoil, bringing quiet joy and true refreshment to the soul.
Let us slow our stride and entrust all our inner tensions to the Lord, who continuously watches over us.
Psalm 94 is a prayer offered during times of difficulty, seeking God's justice and deliverance.
The psalmist was facing external injustice and pressures that threatened to shake the very ground beneath his feet. In ancient Hebrew poetry, "feet slipping" symbolizes feeling overwhelmed, losing control, or being unable to stand under heavy strain.
Yet, the second half of the psalm unveils a precious truth:
God's Steadfast Love (Hesed) is Timely: In Hebrew, the word "supported" in verse 18 implies grasping tightly to make firm. God never demands that we appear unbreakable. When we acknowledge our weakness in the midst of shaking, His unfailing love becomes the steady rock beneath our feet.
Light Amidst Anxiety: Verse 19 honors our emotional reality. The psalmist does not hide that his anxiety was great. Instead, he discovers that God's tender consolations can enter the deepest, most tangled corners of the heart to soothe restless thoughts.
This context gently reminds us: acknowledging our helplessness is never a shame, for the edge of slipping is often where we most clearly experience the grasp of God’s unfailing love.
94 O Lord God, to whom vengeance belongeth; O God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew thyself.
2 Lift up thyself, thou judge of the earth: render a reward to the proud.
3 Lord, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph?
4 How long shall they utter and speak hard things? and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves?
5 They break in pieces thy people, O Lord, and afflict thine heritage.
6 They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless.
7 Yet they say, The Lord shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.
8 Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise?
9 He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?
10 He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know?
11 The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.
12 Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O Lord, and teachest him out of thy law;
13 That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked.
14 For the Lord will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.
15 But judgment shall return unto righteousness: and all the upright in heart shall follow it.
16 Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? or who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?
17 Unless the Lord had been my help, my soul had almost dwelt in silence.
18 When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O Lord, held me up.
19 In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.
20 Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, which frameth mischief by a law?
21 They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood.
22 But the Lord is my defence; and my God is the rock of my refuge.
23 And he shall bring upon them their own iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the Lord our God shall cut them off.
“When I said, 'My foot is slipping,' your unfailing love, Lord, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.”
—— Psalm 94:18-19
1. Light 💡
What touches our hearts most in Psalm 94 is God's deep empathy for our fragility and worry.
Permission to Admit You are Slipping: You don't always have to pretend to be strong. When you pray, "Lord, I can barely hold on," God does not rebuke you. Instead, His steadfast love reaches out immediately to hold you secure.
Deep Inner Comfort: The word "anxiety" in verse 19 carries the sense of "tangled, crowded thoughts within." When many worries clash in your mind, God's peace and promises act like warm sunlight breaking through the fog, restoring quiet gladness.
2. Stillness & Reflection 💭
Today, let God's Word gently prompt your heart:
Is there an area in my life right now where I feel like "my foot is slipping" and I am struggling to stand?
When anxious thoughts tangle inside my heart, am I willing to pause and allow God's word and unfailing love to soothe my soul?
