As December draws near its end, the close of the year is just around the corner. Looking back over the past months, we may have experienced mountaintop joy full of blessings, but we have likely also walked through low valleys, feeling weary and overwhelmed. When the waves of life press hard or our efforts to serve and love others seem to hit a wall, our passion can quietly fade, and we might wonder, "In a low season like this, can I really keep moving forward?"
Today, we will read Psalm 18, a song of praise bursting straight from the heart after surviving the storm.
This Psalm records how God became David’s unshakeable refuge during times of extreme danger and distress. David did not remain stuck in his low season; instead, he turned every rescue into renewed motivation to worship, follow, and serve God. The Lord not only drew him out of deep waters, but also made his feet like the feet of a deer, enabling him to stand secure on the heights.
As you read Psalm 18 today, I invite you to keep these two perspectives in mind:

Psalm 18 is one of the longest psalms in the Psalter, and its historical background is uniquely touching.
This song is also recorded in 2 Samuel 22, composed on the day when the Lord delivered David from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.
Faithfulness Through Long Valleys: Before writing this psalm, David spent years running for his life. He was misunderstood by those close to him, hunted without cause by Saul, and brought to the very brink of death. Yet, in the depths of despair, David never abandoned his faith nor stopped walking uprightly before God.
The Ultimate Deliverer: David understood deeply that surviving those dark shadows was not due to his own wisdom or military prowess, but because "The Lord is my rock." God not only heard his cry in distress, but reached down from on high, took hold of him, and drew him out of deep waters.
This context reassures us: low seasons are not the end of the story; they are the stage where God displays His power and grace. As long as we choose to follow Him closely, He will lead us out of the shadows.

2 The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.
3 I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.
4 The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.
5 The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me.
6 In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.
7 Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken, because he was wroth.

25 With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful; with an upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright;
26 With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself froward.
27 For thou wilt save the afflicted people; but wilt bring down high looks.
28 For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.
29 For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall.
30 As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.

32 It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.
33 He maketh my feet like hinds' feet, and setteth me upon my high places.
34 He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.

1. Light 💡
What stirs our hearts most in Psalm 18 is the resilience and strength God imparts to us while we are in the valley.
He Is Your Safe Refuge: David uses numerous metaphors to describe God’s protection. When you feel exhausted or helpless in daily life or ministry, God is not a distant bystander; He is your instant shelter and strength. All your tears and frailty find a safe place in Him.
Lighting Your Lamp in the Dark: "For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness." (v. 28). Low seasons often bring confusion, but God's faithfulness will not leave you in the shadows forever. He gives the light of His Word to guide your steps and grants strength beyond your circumstances so you can continue serving those around you.

Today, let God's Word gently prompt your heart:
In my current season, am I experiencing a "valley" or a period of weariness? Am I willing to cast these heavy burdens once again onto the "Rock who delivers me"?
Having experienced God's rescue and grace in the past, how can I adjust my heart to keep following and serving Him faithfully today?

A Gratitude List: Take out a piece of paper and write down 2–3 difficult moments God has brought you through in the past, writing beside each one: "The Lord is my Rock."
One Small Step Forward: Choose to do one small act of service or kindness today (such as sending an encouraging note to a struggling friend or helping a tired family member with a chore), declaring through action: "Even in the valley, I will rely on the Lord and keep following Him."

Dear Heavenly Father and Lord Jesus,
Thank You for strengthening my heart through Psalm 18 on this quiet December day. Thank You for being not only my Deliverer, but my strong Rock, my Fortress, and my Shield.
Lord, when I feel weak in the valleys of life or tired in my service, please light my candle and enlighten my darkness. Take hold of my hand and make my feet like the feet of a deer, enabling me to stand secure on high places.
Grant me a steadfast resolve to follow and serve You, so that no matter my circumstances, my heart may continually sing praises to Your holy name.
In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
