I am Dandelion, your Bible reading companion. I am so glad to gather with you once again in the gentle morning calm of God’s Word, searching together for the heavenly wisdom that nourishes our souls and comforts weary hearts.
As we enter early November and the days turn crisp, our lives often shift into a quieter, more reflective rhythm. In our daily interactions, we frequently encounter family members, friends, or colleagues who feel worn out, anxious, or burdened by hidden struggles. Often, we want to help, but we feel at a loss for words, worrying whether our words will sound cold or unhelpful; sometimes, a hasty or careless remark can even add pain to a wounded heart.
Today, we will read Proverbs 12, a chapter that serves as a mirror and guide for our speech—a timeless guide on how to bring healing and restoration through the words we speak.
The proverbs of the wise deal not only with practical conduct, but deeply with how we love those around us through the power of our tongue. As you read Proverbs 12 today, I invite you to hold these two perspectives in mind:
The Piercing and Healing Power of Words: Notice the contrast regarding speech in verse 18. How do rash words wound like a sword? And how does the tongue of the wise bring healing and peace?
A Heavy Heart and a Good Word: Look closely at verse 25. When a person’s heart is weighed down with anxiety and grief, what kind of relief and renewal can a timely, truthful, and gentle word bring?
Let us quiet our hearts together and discover how God teaches us, through His wisdom, to become gentle encouragers to those around us.
Proverbs 12 consists of a series of practical contrasts between righteousness and wickedness, wisdom and folly. Throughout this chapter, words like "mouth," "tongue," and "lips" appear frequently.
In ancient Hebrew wisdom literature, human speech is never viewed as mere idle sound; it is the outward expression of one's inner character, carrying immense power to build up or tear down:
"Like the Piercings of a Sword" vs. "Health and Healing": Verse 18 presents two starkly different ways of speaking. Rash, reckless words (speaking without thought) are like sharp blades that cut deeply into others' spirits. However, speech shaped by heavenly wisdom (the tongue of the wise) brings healing, soothing hurt and restoring quiet peace.
"Heaviness in the Heart... but a Good Word Maketh It Glad": Verse 25 offers a profound insight into human struggle. When anxiety weighs down a person's soul, rendering them helpless, a genuine, thoughtful, and encouraging "good word" has the power to revive hope and bring strength back into their spirit.
This context reminds us that our words carry constructive or destructive weight. God granted us the gift of speech so that we might become channels of His love and gentle care.
12 Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.
2 A good man obtaineth favour of the Lord: but a man of wicked devices will he condemn.
3 A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.
4 A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.
5 The thoughts of the righteous are right: but the counsels of the wicked are deceit.
6 The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood: but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.
7 The wicked are overthrown, and are not: but the house of the righteous shall stand.
8 A man shall be commended according to his wisdom: but he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised.
9 He that is despised, and hath a servant, is better than he that honoureth himself, and lacketh bread.
10 A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.
11 He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that followeth vain persons is void of understanding.
12 The wicked desireth the net of evil men: but the root of the righteous yieldeth fruit.
13 The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall come out of trouble.
14 A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the recompence of a man's hands shall be rendered unto him.
15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.
16 A fool's wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame.
17 He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit.
18 There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.
19 The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.
20 Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counsellors of peace is joy.
21 There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled with mischief.
22 Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight.
23 A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.
24 The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.
25 Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.
26 The righteous is more excellent than his neighbour: but the way of the wicked seduceth them.
27 The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious.
28 In the way of righteousness is life: and in the pathway thereof there is no death.
“Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.”
—— Proverbs 12:25 (KJV)
1. Light 💡
What touches our hearts most in Proverbs 12 is the immense power of care and edification hidden within gentle speech.
True Comfort Springs from Sincerity and Gentleness: Wise comfort is neither empty pleasantry nor condescending advice. It stems from a heart that listens with truthfulness and warmth. A single "good word" spoken with empathy can instantly lift a heavy burden from someone's shoulders.
Guarding the Tongue is an Act of Love: Learning to restrain a hasty tongue, refraining from adding salt to open wounds, and holding back premature judgments are in themselves deep acts of love and respect.
2. Stillness & Reflection 💭
Today, let God's Word gently prompt your heart:
Is there someone in my circle of life right now—a friend, family member, or co-worker—whose heart is weighed down by quiet worries or heavy pressure?
In my daily conversations, do I react hastily to express my own views, or am I willing to pause and seek wise, truthful, and gentle words to build others up?
3. Gentle Practice 🍃
Send a "Good Word": Reach out intentionally to a friend who is going through a busy or challenging season. It doesn't need to be long—a short message of genuine appreciation, encouragement, or care can let them know they are remembered.
A Three-Second Pause: Before responding to any tense or challenging situation today, pause silently for three seconds and pray: "Lord, give me a wise tongue today, that my words may bring healing rather than hurt."
Dear Heavenly Father, God of all wisdom,
Thank You for speaking to our hearts through Proverbs 12 on this November morning. Thank You for the gift of speech. Forgive us for the times when our hasty, impatient, or careless words have brought pain to others.
Lord, shape our hearts with Your truth and love so that our lips may speak words of honesty, gentleness, and wisdom. When those around us are weighed down with anxiety and heavy burdens, grant us discerning hearts and thoughtful tongues to offer timely good words that lift up the weary and comfort the brokenhearted.
May every word we utter today become a clear channel of Your grace, peace, and healing.
In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
